The Sustainable Pork Value Chain (KDV) believes in sustainable meat: healthy animals, energy-neutral pig farming, a better life for the pigs, and meat with the best taste. How we pursued that objective in 2017 is all in this online annual report.

It is the fifth year in a row that we are expressing our ambitions, while being honest about what we can and cannot achieve. We believe that is the only way to continuously innovate... and that is exactly what we want as a chain.

We did it!

In 2017, the Sustainable Pork Value Chain has proven that we can deliver pork with the Antibiotic-free Life Guarantee. This meat comes from animals that are guaranteed never to have been treated with any type of antibiotic during their entire lifetime. Pork products with the Antibiotic-free Life Guarantee can only be introduced if you can really guarantee compliance with the process. We are proud that we were able to develop a reliable safeguarding system.

New management information thanks to RFID ear tags

In 2017 we've demonstrated, thanks to the major efforts of all chain partners, that it is possible: using RFID ear tags to individually register and follow pigs up to the slaughter line. This enables us to select the animals that haven't been treated with antibiotics, and at the same time provides the farmers with very interesting management information. By combining information regarding origin, genetics and health with the slaughter results and sharing this with the pig farmers, they can identify exactly where profits can be made.

We certified our first Italian cold meat producer: Fratelli RIVA. Following their first visit to KDV, the board of directors immediately committed to including KDV sustainable pork with Antibiotic-free Life Guarantee in their selection of cold meat products. This is the way for them to distribute fine cold meat products to the Italian market and to present themselves and their ideals to Italy – a country that is currently addressing the issue of antibiotic resistance.

Daily manure removal as an approved sty system

Pig farms are facing a major challenge: as of 2022, they have to meet stringent standards for ammonia emissions. In order to comply with the changing regulations and create a good sty climate – which is vital to achieving better technical and economic results, healthier animals, and better animal welfare – KDV developed the Sty of the Future with daily manure removal. We remove manure from the sty on a daily basis to prevent ammonia and other harmful gases from building up.

Since 2015, KDV and Solidaridad have been working with farmers in Mozambique on sustainable soya cultivation. About 2,000 soya farmers improved their farming methods; their achievements were recognised in 2017. They are the first African farmers with RTRS certification. Jaap de Wit Jr.: 'With our support to this project, we want to offer small farmers the chance to benefit from sustainable production. We take our responsibility for sustainable feed by contributing to Mozambique's sustainable economic development.'
